In a wayback moment, what in the world did pagers do?
I never had a pager. In fact the first cell phone I ever used belonged to He Who Shall Not Be Named. He moved away from school early 1999 to get a job, and left his phone for me in case of an emergency. Ha. I didn't even know how to use it should there be such an emergency.
So how did they work? Whenever I've seen them in movies or on Greg's Anatomy, the recipient always knows immediately what the page is about. Was it a sort of prehistoric text message displayed?
Someone please enlighten me. I'm very curious how an average person would need a pager.

When they first came out, the coach of the NBA Philadelphia 76's told his players that none of them neded pagers or cell phones. He told them that pagers & cell phone are only used by pimps & drug dealers.LOL
The pager would flash the number of the person trying to contact you. Other people formed their own codes so they would know what the other person wanted. Kind of like textspeak today.
At Hopkins we used text pagers a lot. You can page a doctor and it displayed not only a number but a message too. They flip open so there is more display area than the old school pagers that only display on top. There are also pagers that you can send EKG readings on which are cool. I can't imagine what anyone would need one for in their personal life though. If you have a cell that texts then it does the same thing. I think the only reason some professionals have them now, in the age of cell phones, is so they can be contacted specifically about work-related stuff but without having to give their personal cell number to anyone who might need to text them.
