Looking ahead

I twittered the other day about PW's homeschooling poll and set off a firestorm of inquiries about my intentions to homeschool.

(Okay, so actually only one person twittered me back about it.)

Because, yes, Zesty is so advanced, he will be starting kindergarten this fall.

(The sarcasm is a-BUBBLIN' today.)

Actually, I just need a new thing to obsess over and beat like the proverbial dead horse. I thought my new cell phone search would last until my upgrade in October, and am disappointed to find that I know exactly what I want, and I have to just be patient. Patience is not my key strength.

The deal is this: we know what school system we want our kids to grow up in, but we likely will not be able afford to move there until Splenda is out of high school, due to our financial obligation for her. The year she graduates, Zesty will be beginning 3rd grade, and Pinky will be in 1st grade.

My thoughts are to homeschool until then, and then make the switch once both kids would be in school for the full days. After that, I'll spend all my spare time exercising and scrubbing my house with a toothbrush daily.

For those of you who believe that, there's also some beach front property in the Mojave I'd like to sell you.

For those of you who have done any time at all homeschooling that age group, what are your tips? What do you recommend avoiding? I realize every family and child within that family has differences, but I'm interested in hearing it all.

My cousin homeschools her 3 elementary children and her one preschool child (she also has a toddler and a baby...she's busy.) This is part of the curriculum she uses http://www.mfwbooks.com/ I think she mixes in another with it, but I'll have to search and see if I can find what else she uses.

HEY! :) I homeschooled Caleb & Emma when we were in Columbus - both through the 2nd grade...they still beg to go back to homeschooling...It was a lot of work, dedication, and DISCIPLINE!! (for myself on that last part) :) They don't all learn the same way - I found out that Caleb (being a little boy) did his book work standing up at the table and got it done in record time!! The best part? They both know how to set goals on what needs to be done and get it done....We (eventually they did it on their own) set curriculum goals at the beginning of every week and each day they knew what had to be accomplished. And join a homeschool group!!!! We met once a week and they got to "take classes" with the other kids that the parents taught. Loved it - field trips also....Actually my kids have tested so high ever since....When we transferred them to Bro Smiths school in 3rd grade - they took the CAT (California Achievement Test) and Caleb tested in 12th grade level for Science!!! And they were both OFF the charts on their reading and comprehension levels! :) Actually he is in 8th and already has several high school credits under his belt...and that is with missing his 6th grade year!! (when he was sick). Sorry so long!!! You can tell that I loved homeschooling!!! I miss it as much as they do ...... :( We've talked about going back to it.....
