The Deep End

You could say that I climbed up the ladder to the high dive on my own accord. I jack-knifed off almost 9 weeks ago. I feel like I've been in the air ever since. Somersaulting, twisting, knowing the moment was coming that I would actually hit the water.

Last week I hit the water. I'm not drowning, I know how to swim. I even know how to tread water. You pedal the bicycle with your legs while your arms spread the peanut butter on the bread.

My vision is to touch the bottom of the pool, swim back to the surface, and climb out of the pool. Dripping wet, a little breathless, but triumphant that I completed the dive. I don't want to be treading water forever, just barely keeping my head above the surface. I certainly don't want to do the deadman's float. I also don't like water up my nose.

But if the last 9 weeks were the process of the dive, how long will it be for me to touch the bottom of the pool? How deep is the pool? How long does it all take?
